PCIT Information and Guidelines for Utah Children in Foster Care and Parents

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based therapy for children age 2 years-6 months to 6 years-11 months and their parents or caregivers.

Parents receive hands-on learning of effective parenting skills as the PCIT therapist coaches the parent (using a “bug in the ear” technique) while the parent is interacting with their child. PCIT teaches parents skills of praise and positive attention, ignoring inappropriate behavior, validating their child’s experience, and using consistent discipline.

Increasing Positive Relationships and Consistent Discipline

The first phase of PCIT focuses on enhancing the relationship between a parent and their child and increasing their positive interactions. The second phase of PCIT teaches parents a step-by-step way to consistently and non-emotionally discipline their child when it is needed.

Research Findings of PCIT

Research shows PCIT improves outcomes for children with disruptive behaviors, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, trauma, attachment issues, and fetal alcohol effects. These positive outcomes are long-lasting and improvements are still seen one to two years following treatment.

Telehealth Is Very Effective for PCIT

Unlike some therapy modalities, telehealth works well for PCIT. Therefore, biological parents, foster parents, kinship caregivers across the state of Utah can access PCIT and can become proficient at using PCIT skills with their child.
